It's common knowledge that the rich and fertile soil of Hettinger County is well suited for producing quality crops. A lesser known reality is that local farms, like those owned by the Mayer family near Mott, cultivate more than grain—they cultivate character. The youngest son of the Mayer family, Theodore Mayer, will be joining other fine young men and women as one of the 10% of applicants accepted into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point this year.

Farmers obviously aren't trading their products directly with local Chinese bakers, which raises the legitimate question—how does North Dakota wheat end up abroad?
A 103.98-bushels-per-acre spring wheat yield and a 2018 National Wheat Yield Contest first- place trophy would typically be considered a feat worth hanging your hat on, but Jon Wert, of New England, said he isn't even close to reaching his yield goals. "My winning field has averaged over 100 bushels in three of the last nine years," Wert said. "It's nothing to sneeze at, but I know that I could do better than that."

Beer and Agriculture have a deep-rooted connection dating back to the dawn of civilization. The earliest confirmed example of that connection comes from the Zagros Mountains of central Iran where fragments of a clay jug, dated from between 5,000 and 5,400 years ago, were scientifically proven to be coated with beerstone, a byproduct of the brewing process. Since then, beer has remained ingrained in agrarian culture and continues to be one of the chief byproducts of barley, wheat and hops in the United States.
The 2019 America's Farmers campaign has kicked off with the Grow Rural Education program's launch, which provides North Dakota farmers with the opportunity to nominate local rural public schools for grants of up to $25,000 to enhance their school's science, technology, engineering and math curriculums. Having awarded more than $530,000 to North Dakota schools and more than $51 million to worthy organizations and causes since 2010, the America's Farmers organization, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, is the philanthropic arm of Bayer.
Dickinson State University's Agriculture Club hosted the annual Roughrider Judging competition on Saturday, Jan. 2. Area FFA and 4-H contestants were invited to Dickinson State University to participate in livestock judging, agronomy and agriculture sales contests.
An innovative tri-focus approach to controlling the noxious weeds in Stark County has landed Travis Jepson the title of North Dakota Weed Control Association's "Weed Warrior" for 2019. "Helping people come up with a weekly management plan on what best to do to solve the issues they are having is my favorite aspect of what I do," he said. "It's just an honor and it's validating to be recognized by your peers, that what you are doing is appreciated and that they have confidence in your abilities and in your program."
Animal losses are part-and-parcel of raising livestock in North Dakota. Death can come to a ranch in the form of disease, accident, inter-animal competition or natural disasters such as flooding or fire, sparking the question—what do I do with the carcass? The North Dakota State University Extension Center is advising ranchers to think about mortality management before a death occurs to avoid having problems after the fact. Improper disposal of animal carcasses is a serious matter that can land those unaware or ignorant to the law in deep water.
