Don not only carried on the storied tradition of ‘The Sugarbeet Grower’, but he brought the publication to new heights. You may have read that we initially thought Jake Chisholm would be the new editor, but a last-minute complication precluded Jake from taking on that role. However, Jake will be contributing to 'The Sugarbeet Grower' in a free-lance writing capacity. A Little About The Editor: With Don retiring at the end of the summer, that granted an opportunity for a young guy like myself to come in and continue the illustrious legacy of such a valued publication. The majority of my background in agriculture comes from four years at North Dakota State University where I received a B.S. degree in December of 2015, majoring in Crop & Weed Science and minoring in Agribusiness. While in school I was engaged in four internships, ranging from warehouse management to research agronomy, to crop scouting. Besides working with sugarbeets for two of those four years, I also established a background in wheat, soybeans, canola, sunflowers, corn and dry beans. One of my biggest passions is dirt track racing. Going to the local dirt tracks up and down the Red River Valley since I was able to walk led me to getting my first taste of writing. In 2012 I got the job as the reporter for the race track in Ada, Minn. At the time I just thought it was a good way for a 19 year old kid to get into the races for free and maybe get a little gas money at the end of the night, too. Little did I know it would lead to me writing for three additional race tracks in the area, a public relations service for individual race teams, and a photography business as well. It’s turned out to be a nice little "side job". Looking back now, however, it was the perfect way to cut my teeth into journalism. I believe there will be many similarities in the way I write at the race track as I will here in ‘The Sugarbeet Grower’. I share the same passion for dirt track racing as I do for agriculture, and more specially sugarbeets. In my first few weeks I’ve already met dozens of amazing people within the sugarbeet industry, which excites me even more about the future. What’s To Come: We will continue to provide accurate and timely stories covering all angles of the sugarbeet industry just as Don did for so many years. You can look for design updates within the magazine in upcoming issues, as well as much more content online and on social media. We are also ramping up our social media team to connect with our readers beyond the pages of the magazine. We have added the "Photos from the Field" section to the publication, which will highlight photos submitted from our growers. We’ve already received several of photo submissions and we invite everyone to send us your photos throughout the year, whether you’re in the field, shop, or factory! We will also be inaugurating another new section for recipes, which will mostly consist of you, the reader’s, favorite dishes and desserts.
