I've tried to take advantage of the gorgeous fall weather we've been having in South Dakota.

Up until last week, we had days of sunshine, with temps in the mid-60s. The wind has kept her howling to a minimum, so I've spent more time riding outside than inside. The last moments of sunlight have been eked out on the back of a horse on more than one occasion.

Two weeks ago, we had some guests to the ranch, which meant a trip to see the broodmare band. Our visitors really don't know what they're getting themselves into when we take them 4.5 miles through the pasture to see the girls. But once they've been to meet the girls, it's the first thing they all ask to do on a return trip.

Visiting our mare herd is similar to playing Santa at Christmas. They swarm you, begging for scratches, rubs and pats, and they usually chase one another off to gain the sole attention of the closest visitor. Plus, they're gorgeous. It never hurts to be a pretty girl, of any species.

Happy Trails!
