I've heard that line -- or a close variation of it -- hundreds of times through the year. I've said and written it myself many times, too.
The line has been repeated so often that I sometimes wonder if it's at risk of becoming a cliche, or a trite, overused phrase that's lost meaning.
But what's happening now across the Upper Midwest is overwhelming proof that the line still has value. Farmers across the Dakotas, Minnesota and Montana have made tremendous planting progress overall in recent days. Cooperative weather and today's equipment -- both big and sophisticated -- have allowed them to get a big chunk of their 2017 crop into the ground.
Please note that I wrote "overall." Some producers, struggling with uncooperative weather, haven't planted nearly as much as they should have.

But with a little luck, planting conditions will improve and behind-schedule farmers can start going full bore in their fields. And, hey, (as you may have heard) with today's equipment, farmers can cover a lot of acres in a short time.
