Science fiction writer Ray Bradbury wrote a classic short story called "There Will Come Soft Rains." Sadly, chunks of the Upper Midwest have been hurt with hard, heavy rains in the past day. A reader near McVille, N.D., which received more than 5 inches in places, sent me this image.
Fall rains in this part of the country are a mixed blessing. In years with dry summers, we welcome and applaud them. But this year they're doing great damage and further delaying an already late harvest.
