KNUTSON: Extra hay on Christmas?

In prior generations, or so I'm told, many ranchers gave their cattle a little extra hay or feed on Christmas as a present. My own ancestors were among the ranchers who did it, or so I'm told.

Well, I like livestock. And Christmas. And sentiment. But extra hay on Christmas, it seems to me, is a misguided gesture that has nothing to do with the proper treatment of livestock, which is what matters.

I dunno; do any ranchers still give extra hay on Christmas to their livestock? Not to compensate for a day they plan to skip feeding, but rather as a Christmas gift to the animals.

Drop me a line and let me know. And if you’re a rancher who does it, let me know why.
