Meteorological winter starts in December, but Meteorologist John Wheeler isn't expecting much wintery weather for the Northern Plains. There's very little precipitation in the forecast and no arctic air expected to descend far enough south to affect the region.

But just because winter weather isn't here yet doesn't mean it's not coming. It's just a soft start to the season.

"That doesn't mean we're cancelling winter," Wheeler said.

While the East coast might see some precipitation in the next week, and western Canada might see some the following week. But nothing is expected in the Northern Plains or even much of the central United States.

"Most of the United States will be bone dry or very nearly so," Wheeler said.
