Mitchell sets daily record for rainfall

Rain, rain, everywhere.

Mitchell set a record Wednesday for total daily rainfall on Sept. 19 with 2.12 inches, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls. Mitchell’s previous record for Sept. 19 was 1.6 inches, which happened in 1931 and in 1986.

Much of southeastern South Dakota continues to be in a flood warning. A large portion of central and eastern Hutchinson County is in a flash flood warning.

A four-day September storm rolled through the Upper Midwest this week. Mitchell and the surrounding region has received on-and-off rainstorms since Monday. The National Weather Service says precipitation is expected to continue through Thursday afternoon in Mitchell, with an additional quarter- to half-inch possible.

Unofficial National Weather Service rainfall totals show Parkston received 2.5 inches, Avon getting 3.36 inches and Howard getting 2.07 inches. Geddes received about 5 inches of rain, inducing in ditches, basements and campers, according to one area resident.
