What is the criterion for hot weather? This question once came up at the family supper table and I offered my personal thoughts to the family although they did not agree. Here is my take.
First of all, being hot, personally, is not always the result of hot weather. One can mow the lawn in the sun while the temperature is in the 70s and wish for a cold beverage afterwards, but most of us can agree that a day in the 70s is not all that hot. So at what temperature is the weather officially hot? This is one thing neither the National Weather Service nor the World Meteorological Organization has yet to define.
My personal opinion is that, for our region, summer temperatures from 78 to 86 degrees classify as “warm.” Temperatures from 87 to 92 are “very warm.” But I require at least 93 degrees before I will call a day “hot.” The rest of the family disagreed and were not impressed by my reminder that I was the only one with a college degree in meteorology.
