Record-breaking temperatures and summer-like severe thunderstorms will continue a few more days across the Southeastern and Eastern United States. The northward bulge of near-tropical air is the result of a very strong sub-tropical Jet Stream, which is a by-product of the ongoing El Nino. The strong Southern Jet brings more active weather; including stronger storms, heavier rains, along with greater northward and southward displacements of air (Hence the hot winter weather.). Here in the North, the El Nino has the effect of weakening the Polar Jet Stream, resulting in fewer storms, milder air and less extreme temperature changes. It may be a bit chilly out today, but this is not really particularly cold considering the season.
