December has been unusually mild. However, the warmest day has been 46 degrees back on Dec. 10. The all-time record high temperature in Fargo Moorhead for the month of December is 65 degrees set Dec. 6, 1939. There had been very little cold weather and virtually no rain or snow that winter. As this warm spell developed, sunshine was able to heat the dry ground which added greatly to the afternoon temperatures. Interestingly, there was a white Christmas in 1939 as a light, one-inch snow fell on Dec. 19 which persisted on the ground into the New Year. This remains the one of only two 60-degree temperatures ever recorded in Fargo-Moorhead during the three winter months. The other was 66 degrees on Feb. 25, 1958.
