Weather Talk: June can be a weather tease

June weather can be a tease. So often it happens that the day begins pleasantly mild and perfectly sunny, but by shortly after noon the first clouds appear and soon the day turns disappointingly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms.

June weather can be a tease. So often it happens that the day begins pleasantly mild and perfectly sunny, but by shortly after noon the first clouds appear and soon the day turns disappointingly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms.

A winter day which dawns sunny will likely remain sunny. Unless there is a weather system approaching, the weather is likely to remain unchanged. However, many a pretty June morning will turn ugly in the afternoon. The reason is the presence of cold air in the upper atmosphere.

During this time of year, the sun’s rays strike the ground with great strength, causing rising columns of warm air. If upper air temperatures are warm, the thermals do nothing. But if the upper atmosphere is cold, then any moisture in the rising air turns into clouds and showers, causing a beautiful morning to become cloudy, unsettled, and possibly stormy.
