FARGO, N.D. - The sudden immersion of warm weather this weekend has people in a spring state of mind. But is winter weather really over? Past springs suggest it could be almost over or there might be a long way to go.
In each of the past two springs, March and April have brought only a few dustings of snow. But the spring of 2014 revealed no bare ground until early April. Spring of 2013 was ridiculous, as the snowstorms kept coming, keeping our ground snow-covered through April 27. Spring of 2012 was equally ridiculously warm with six days in the 60s and six more in the 70s during March. Spring of 2011 brought several snowstorms in April, including a final half-inch April 30 that was still on the ground the first day of May. Back in 2008, winter seemed never to quit, delivering an eight-inch snowfall March 21, another six April 6, and a final nine inches on April 26.
Spring is a volatile time of year, weather-wise, leaving us guessing at what to expect.
