Each year across the United States, a few hundred people are struck by lightning. About 20-30 of those die. Others suffer through a life with painful migraines and neurological injuries.

During an average lifespan, the odds of being struck by lightning are about one in 13,000 people. Consider that the population of Fargo is about 115,000 and the population of the greater Fargo Moorhead area is about 230,000, so it could be argued the chance of you or someone you know being struck is actually not that low.

Realistically, our lightning season is short, and there is a higher risk in the southern United States than here where winters are so long and lightning free. But our lightning season is here, so stay safe. Go inside when you see lightning or hear thunder. Don’t take chances. Remember, those chances are not as way out as you might think.
