It is almost June and still the Grand Forks office of the National Weather Service has yet to issue a Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Warning for any part of eastern North Dakota or northwestern Minnesota. Active thunderstorms have passed us by to the south several times, but things have been very quiet in our region so far.
Actually, severe thunderstorms are relatively rare here in March and not very common in April. But we usually get a day or two in May with a few severe storms.
Instead, all of our warm days have been sunny and dry and all of our rainy days have been cool. These are not good combinations for severe storms. I recall a complete absence of severe storms in the spring of 1995. The lack of storms continued until well into June that year but regular storminess did occur in July and August.
It is impossible to predict how stormy our summer will be, but the quiet weather this spring has certainly been pleasant.
