ST. PAUL – With 5.5 inches of snow at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, the Twin Cities area had its largest snowfall in more than a year and a half.
The Monday-Tuesday snowstorm slowed traffic and led to spinouts and crashes across the metro area. Statewide, there were 350 crashes – 33 with injuries, but none serious – and 301 vehicles that had spun out or gone off the road from 1 p.m. Monday through 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The southern suburbs had the most snow in the Twin Cities area. Dakota County appeared to have the highest totals, with Apple Valley reporting 8 inches as of about noon Tuesday.
Farther south, there were even larger amounts. The highest Minnesota total as of Tuesday afternoon was in Mapleton, where 12.5 inches was reported. Fairmont followed with 11.5 inches.
The Monday-Tuesday snowstorm is already the largest seen at the airport – the official weather observation point for the Twin Cities – since 6.5 inches fell April 3-4, 2014.
