Already the sixth of November and there has not been even a flake snow! Actually, this is not as unusual as many people seem to think.

While we have yet to see our first snowfall of the season, the weather office is hip deep in questions about the rarity of this snow-less autumn.  Is it unusual to have seen nary a flake at this point in the autumn? Well, it is later than average.

The first flurries typically fly sometime in October. The average first measurable snow date is October 31. The average first one-inch snowfall is November 14. But these are only averages and the first snow of the winter season is something which varies greatly from year to year.

The earliest first measurable snow was when two inches fell on September 24, 1912. The latest first snowfall on record was on December 31, 1899. The latest first one-inch snowfall in a season was January 27, 1944.
