FARGO, N.D. -- New estimates put North Dakota's 2008 corn production at a record 285 million bushels and soybean production at 105 million bushels.

The federal Agriculture Department says the latest soybean production estimate is down about 2 percent from November while the corn estimate is unchanged.

Farmers in the state are expected to harvest 1.3 billion pounds of oil sunflowers, up 2 per-cent from 2007.

Other crop estimates are down:

-- Canola production for 2008 is estimated at 1.31 billion pounds and flaxseed production is estimated at about 5.5 million bushels, both down slightly from the previous year.

-- Dry edible pea production is estimated at 7.9 million hundredweight, down 27 percent from the 2007 record. Lentil production is estimated at 846,000 hundredweight, down from 1.44 million cwt in 2007.

-- North Dakota's sugar beet production is estimated at 5.10 million tons, down from 5.71 million tons in 2007.
