PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. -- Farmers west of Prince Albert are on high alert after anthrax showed up on a farm in the area.

According to the International Society of Infectious Diseases, a cow died from anthrax last week in the rural municipality of Canwood.

Anthrax is caused by toxic spores in the soil.

Grazing animals breathe in the fumes and get sick.

Vaccinations are available for cattle and bison to protect them from getting the disease, but not all producers choose to vaccinate their herds.

More than 800 cattle in Saskatchewan died from anthrax exposure in 2006.

"I think it's a wakeup call," said area Reeve Richard Porter. "The other thing it does is remind us gently, don't take too many things for granted, because it can happen."
