In the world of weeds, Palmer amaranth is now America’s Public Enemy No. 1.
The weed, also known as Palmer pigweed, has been voted the most troublesome weed in the U.S. by the Weed Science Society of America.
Palmer amaranth can devastate crop yields and damage even rugged farm equipment. A single plants can produce as many as a1million seeds during a growing season, according to the Weed Science Society of America.
Hundreds of weed scientists, extension agents and practitioners across 49 U.S. states, Puerto Rico and eight Canadian provinces participated in the 2015 survey. They provided input on both the most common weeds (those most frequently seen) and the most troublesome weeds (those most difficult to control) in 26 different cropping systems and natural areas.
In Canada, wild buckwheat and wild oat were identified as identified as major threats.
