FARGO, N.D. -- Greg Lardy says his first priority when he takes the helm of the North Dakota State University Animal Science Department Oct. 1 will be to replace himself and three other faculty.
A Sept. 30 internal memo at NDSU announced a change that was expected by many. The department has 24 faculty and 40 support staff.
Lardy most recently has been extension beef cattle specialist, with a 60 percent extension and and 40 percent research appointment. He holds a doctorate in ruminant nutrition from the University of Nebraska, and a master's degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia. His bachelor's degree in animal and range sciences is from NDSU in 1991.
Lardy says the department is filling a swine position, reviewing applications by the end of October and interviewing in November for an expected hire in January. He'll be organizing search committees for three other posts, which he hopes could be filled by August 2010:
n Extension sheep specialist, vacated when Justin Luther went to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.

n Animal science teaching post, to be vacated by Russ Danielson, long-time associate professor, who in September announced he'll retire in December. Danielson has been active as an adviser to the Saddle and Sirloin Club, among other things, and has research interests in beef cattle systems and management.
n Extension beef cattle specialist, being vacated by Lardy.
Dave Buchanan, who left the chairmanship late last January, remains on the faculty where he teaches a feeds and feeding course. He is working on distance education with county Extension Service agents and has teaches a graduate-level statistics course. He's also working on a larger consortium on gene markers in beef cattle.
