Former employee of Giants Snacks indicted on embezzlement charge

The former employee is accused of running schemes to pay student loans, issue improper checks to someone outside the business and pay herself too much in reimbursement for shipping costs.

WAHPETON, N.D. — A former general manager and treasurer has been indicted on eight counts in federal court, accused of embezzling up to $600,000 from a Wahpeton business.

Lucy Spiekermeier, a former employee and current shareholder of Giants Snacks Inc., is accused of running schemes to pay student loans, issue improper checks to someone outside the business and pay herself too much in reimbursement for shipping costs.

Court documents accuse Spiekermeier of committing the crimes from 2016 until July 2020. Among the charges she is facing are theft, fraud and unjust enrichment.

Spiekermeier resigned from her position at Giants Snacks on Aug. 17, one day before the company's primary lender was scheduled to visit.

She is also accused of deleting emails and destroying financial records.
