GRAND FORKS, N.D. - A Canadian grain company has acquired a rail facility in Grand Forks that can ship ag products to global markets.

Viterra, headquartered Regina, Sask., closed Monday on the purchase of Gavilon Grain's handling assets in Grand Forks at 4256 54th Ave. N., according to a news release. The purchase helps expand Viterra's presence in North Dakota - it has facilities in Ray, Minot and Northgate - as well as the U.S.

"We're looking forward to working closely with local customers to provide them with superior service, including access to global markets, the expertise of our staff, flexible contracting options and a wide variety of online tools that are available exclusively to Viterra customers across our asset network," Kyle Jeworski, Viterra's President and CEO for North America, said in a statement.

The Grand Forks facility can store 140,000 metric tons, or roughly 154,000 U.S. tons, can load up to 110 railcars serviced by BNSF Railway and has two truck-receiving pits and a grain dryer. Viterra plans to make "a number of immediate capital upgrades at the site," according to the release.
