FARGO, N.D. – The Alex Stern Foundation has awarded the Great Plains Food Bank a $10,000 grant in an effort to bolster the organization’s food recovery and distribution efforts and Backpack Program, which directly addresses childhood hunger.

A longtime supporter, the Alex Stern Foundation has now donated $215,000 to the Great Plains Food Bank since 1999 to benefit a variety of programs and initiatives.

“The Alex Stern Foundation continues to be a key partner in our work and we are thankful once again for their generous support,” Great Plains Food Bank CEO Steve Sellent said. “This gift will make a significant impact in supporting efforts of the Great Plains Food Bank to feed children that might otherwise go without eating.”

In 2015 alone, 93,000 individuals sought food assistance from the Great Plains Food Bank with 36 percent of those being children. The Backpack Program is designed to assist hungry children when there is limited access to food such as on weekends, school vacations or during the summer months. Each backpack is filled with nonperishable and easily consumed food for four meals plus snacks.
