BISMARCK, N.D. -- The Agriculture Department says North Dakota has more farms, and on average they're slightly smaller.

The 2007 Census of Agriculture says North Dakota had 31,970 farms in 2007, up 4 percent from the last census in 2002. The average size of a farm in the state was 1,241 acres, a drop of 3 percent.

The total value of agriculture production nearly doubled in North Dakota over the five-year span, to slightly more than $6 billion.

Government payments were up 23 percent, to more than $359 million.
