A truck with a livestock trailer carrying pigs overturned near Pekin, North Dakota, early the morning of Thursday, Oct. 21, killing some of the animals. The truck's driver was uninjured.

The Peterbilt truck driver, Chad Wood, 51, of Dow City Iowa, was traveling south on North Dakota Highway 1, 1.5 miles southeast of Pekin when he made an evasive maneuver to avoid striking a deer in the roadway, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said. The 2011 truck left the roadway and entered the east ditch, continuing to travel south in the ditch as it slowed, then tipped onto its side.

Wood was wearing his seat belt and was not injured. The number of pigs that died as a result of the accident was unknown as of about 2 p.m. Oct. 21, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said.
