BIGELOW, Minn. - Flames engulfed and consumed a granary north of Bigelow just after 2:30 a.m. Monday.
Though the cause hasn’t been confirmed, Bigelow firefighters speculate the culprit was a lightning strike - one of many during a storm that rolled through the area in the middle of the night.
“The building was fully engulfed when we got there,” Hohensee said. “With the wind as bad as it was, the fire was getting to the point where it was trying to jump to the nearby building. So we got that taken care of first, then extinguished the fire engulfing the building.”
The owners were on their property, 31633 Monroe Ave., when the fire broke out. The granary is situated near a barn, house and several other buildings on the property.
“I’m just happy that nobody was hurt, because the conditions were right where it could have spread to nearby buildings real quickly.” Hohensee said. “We had a good response time, it went well, and I feel bad for the people that lost their building.”
