BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota 4-H members, ages 16 to 18, are encouraged to apply for the opportunity to attend the National 4-H Conference April 9-14, 2016, in Chevy Chase, Md.

"The National 4-H Conference is a premier professional and leadership development event for 4-H members across the U.S. and its territories," said Audrey Rider, SDSU Extension State 4-H Events Field Specialist.

The conference is administered by the National 4-H Headquarters of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture within the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Held annually since 1927, except for several years during World War II, the camp's mission is to assist in the development of the next generation's leaders.

Delegates attend training workshops, become acquainted with government and have the opportunity to meet with state leaders.

"This experience has been a tradition for 4-H members since 1927. In 1958, the event name, formerly known as the "National 4-H Club Camp," was changed to National 4-H Conference," Rider said.

A little more history
