Chuck Tryon has been named as president of operations for Bushel Boy Farms in Owatonna, Minn., and Mason City, Iowa. Bushel Boy Farms is a leading producer of greenhouse-grown produce year-round in the upper Midwest.
Bushel Boy Farms was founded in Owatonna in 1990 with a desire to grow fresh, vine-ripened tomatoes year-round, through the Minnesota winter.
Tryon has experience in food and agriculture including leadership positions with Pillsbury, General Mills and Ecolab, where he led initiatives related to business strategy, commercial operations, market expansion, customer acquisition, food safety and sustainable agriculture. He joined the Bushel Boy Farms in late 2020, during a period of growth for the company, according to the release.
“We’ve put together a leadership team with the experience and skills required to drive business growth coming out of a very challenging pandemic year,” said Tryon. “I look forward to working with a team who are just as driven by their passion for innovation and commitment to sustainable practices as I am.”
Within the past year, Bushel Boy Farms launched a locally grown strawberries operation and expanded its tomato assortment with several new varieties. Expansion efforts will continue under Tryon, according to the company, with plans for new product categories and technologies in the pipeline for 2021.
Last winter, Bushel Boy Farms opened its expanded growing facilities in Mason City, a 16.5-acre greenhouse, along with a 4.5-acre research and development greenhouse at its flagship operation in Owatonna. The two sites created a total of 50 jobs, according to the company.
Tryon was inspired by his father, who worked in the grocery business, to pursue a career in food and agriculture. After spending over two decades at Pillsbury and General Mills, Tryon "harnessed his passion for sustainability and premium-branded specialty vegetables", said the press release.
“Chuck’s deep roots in the food industry, coupled with his drive to better the Bushel Boy organization during this period of unbelievable growth for the brand, made him the perfect fit for this position,” said William Rahr, president and CEO of Rahr Corporation, Bushel Boy’s parent company. “With Chuck at the helm and an incredibly talented team supporting him, we have no doubt that this period of innovation and growth will continue.”
In his role, Tryon will also lead initiatives related to company culture, community involvement and product innovation.
