State grain elevator regulators in North Dakota and South Dakota will meet with farmers on June 17, in Redfield, S.D., to discuss fallout in state grain handling laws in the wake of matters involving the Anderson Seed Co. insolvency.
Anderson Seed, based in Mentor, Minn., went insolvent in February 2012. The company sold many of its assets in the Dakotas and Minnesota to Legumex Walker based in Seattle, Wash., and Winnipeg. The case left some $5 million in unpaid claims to South Dakota and North Dakota farmers.
The meeting at 1 p.m. at the Redfield American Legion Hall will feature South Dakota Public Utilities Commissioner Chris Nelson and grain warehouse division director Jim Mehlhaff, as well as Sue Richter, license director for the North Dakota Public Service.
South Dakota Farmers Union Legislative Director Mike Traxinger, who met recently with North Dakota PSC officials about the state's farmer-funded indemnity fund for credit sales contracts, says he'll talk about "next steps needed to further protect producers" in South Dakota.
