A horse was killed and two people injured in a crash early Sunday morning near Lawton, N.D., the state Highway Patrol said Monday.
The driver, Jack Nesdahl, 29, and his passenger, John Rodriguez, 16, both from East Grand Forks, had non-life-threatening injuries.
They were southbound on North Dakota Highway 1 in a Pontiac Grand Am with newspapers to deliver in Lawton. About two miles north of town, they struck the horse, which was standing in the road. The patrol said it had escaped its pen near the highway.
The two walked to a nearby farm house for help, and were taken to First Care Hospital in nearby Park River, N.D. Rodriguez was treated and released there. Nesdahl was taken to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks where he was treated and released.
Both were wearing seatbelts. The body of the horse was removed by the owner after the accident.
