FARGO, N.D. - Ken Hellevang, a professor in North Dakota State University’s Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department, has been named the department’s interim chair.
“Dr. Hellevang has a long history with the Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department and its constituencies,” says Greg Lardy, associate vice president of Agricultural Affairs at NDSU and acting director of the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station.
“We are excited to have him be willing to serve in this capacity,” Lardy adds. “His experience working with constituents and stakeholders will be invaluable as the department launches its new undergraduate precision agriculture program.”
Hellevang joined the department in 1980. He also is an NDSU Extension agricultural engineer.
He is a nationally recognized expert in grain storage and drying, structural engineering and home moisture issues. He has won numerous awards for his work and has served in a variety of leadership roles with the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.

Hellevang earned bachelor of science and master’s degrees from South Dakota State University and a Ph.D. from NDSU.
“It is an honor to be selected by colleagues and administrators to serve as interim chair,” he says. “It is an exciting time for our department, offering engineering degrees with a biosystems concentration or agricultural concentration, an agricultural systems management degree that leads to employment in a broad variety of both agribusiness and other employers, and the new precision agriculture degree. There is a wide range of research being conducted in precision agriculture, grain storage and processing, and water resources. In addition, there is a vibrant Extension program providing education and technical assistance.”
