The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service has developed a number of alternatives to antibiotics.

Here are a few examples provided by USDA:

•Poultry disease -- Researchers have used food supplements, probiotics (molecules produced by cells of the immune system) and phytonutrients (organic components of plants that are thought to promote health) to fight poultry disease.

•Mastitis -- Vitamin D has been found to reduce the severity of mastitis, a common and costly disease in dairy cattle.

&bukk;Salmonella, E. coli -- Several compounds have been found to be effective in killing foodborne bacteria and be useful in treating piglets and calves. The compounds have helped reduce or eliminate Salmonella and E. coli.
