In the December online supplement to Safety+Health Magazine, the publication cites Occupational Safety and Health Administration figures on recent grain elevator violation penalties:
• $1.6 million: South Dakota Wheat Growers Association of Aberdeen, for a Dec. 22, 2009, engulfment and suffocation.
• $1.6 million: Tempel Grain Elevators LLP, fined for May 29, 2009, engulfment and suffocation of a teen worker at Haswell, Colo.
• $729,000: Hillsdale Elevator Co., fined for August 2010 engulfment of 49-year-old worker at the company's Geneseo, Ill., facility, and led to further violations at its Annawan, Ill., facility.
• $721,000: Cooperative Plus Inc., facility at Burlington, Wis., fined when a worker was buried to his chest in frozen soybeans in February 2010. He was rescued.

• $550,000: Haasbach LLC's Carroll, Ill., facility fined when two teen workers died and a 20-year-old employee was seriously injured while "walking down corn" in a July 2010 incident.
• $465,500: Gavilon Grain LLC, Morral, Ohio, facility fined when a 20-year-old worker is caught in a discharge auger while cleaning out a grain bin. The death prompted inspections and fines at two other Gavilon facilities.
