Canada has placed new restrictions on raw poultry and poultry products that can be brought into the country from five states, including Minnesota.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, travelers into Canada can't bring with them raw poultry, raw poultry products and byproducts, including eggs and raw pet foods, sourced, processed or packaged from Minnesota, California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Cases of avian influenza have been reported in the other four states, as well.

Examples of restricted items include:

•Live birds and hatching eggs.

•Eggs, yolks and egg whites.

•Poultry meat other than fully cooked, canned, commercially sterile meat products.

•Feathers.

•Poultry manure and litter.

Food safety isn't threatened. The restrictions were enacted to prevent the spread of avian influenza into other parts of Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says.

Live pet birds can still be brought into Canada with official certification from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
