PIERRE, S.D. — The South Dakota Department of Health reported a total of 1,219 active cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, May 17, up 23 from Saturday.

There are 77 people hospitalized for COVID-19, up two from Saturday and recoveries from the illness caused by the coronavirus are at 2,724, which is an increase of 51 from Saturday.

The state has reported a total of 3,987 positive cases, up 28 from Saturday. The number of deaths in the state as a result from COVID-19 remained at 44, according to the department of health.

Minnehaha County still leads the state in active cases with 903 active cases, which is down 25 from Saturday. Here's a look at other counties:

  • Brown County has 106 active cases.
  • Lincoln County has 45 active cases.
  • Pennington County has 37 active cases.
  • Union County has 18 active cases.
  • Beadle County has 10 active cases.
  • Oglala Lakota County has nine active cases.
