Interest in professional farm managers is growing among landlords in much of the Upper Midwest. The American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, based in Denver, suggests that landlords thinking about hiring a farm manager ask these questions:
Does the farm manager:
Behave in a positive way toward farmers, other farm managers and other potential colleagues?
Strive for agreements that satisfy the needs of both the landowner and farmer or tenant?
Stay familiar with local traditions and local, state and federal regulations?

Maintain a network of colleagues among professional farm managers, extension service officials, ag attorneys and input suppliers, among others?
Have any interest that might conflict with the interests of the landowner or farmer or tenant?
Make their client's objectives their own? (Rather than impose their own objectives on the client).
Try to understand the landowner's wants and needs?
Specialize in issues relevant to the landlord's farm?
