Agriculture remains key industry for Minnesota

 Anyone who lives in rural Minnesota knows that agriculture is central to our way of life. We’re surrounded by fields and livestock, passing a tractor on the way into town is a regular experience, and virtually all of us either work in agriculture-related jobs ourselves or have family and friends employed in the industry.

MADISON, S.D. — When the H1N1 flu virus starting making the news last spring, some people referred to it as the “swine flu.” Very quickly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared that it isn’t contracted by eating pork products and that it should be called the “H1N1 virus.”

WASHINGTON — There’s a lot of excitement these days about buying food from local farmers. It is a win-win-win. Consumers get fresh produce and maybe even cheese, eggs and meat. Farmers and ranchers make more money by selling directly to consumers. Supporting those farmers also helps support the local economy.
