The U.S. hog herd grew 9 percent during the March-May quarter compared with a year ago, a U.S. Department of Agriculture report showed on Friday, reflecting better measures to combat a deadly pig virus which resulted in record pigs per litter, analysts said.
Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) virus continues to be a very critical health issue for the U.S. swine industry. According to Bob Thaler, South Dakota State University Extension swine specialist, some estimates show as many as 3 million pigs were lost to PED in 2013.
