BSE safeguards working
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — What a difference 8½ years makes. When the first bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)-infected cow was found in Mabton, Wash., in December 2003, U.S. beef exports had been steadily increasing, with 1.1 million tons carcass weight equivalent (CWE) exported in 2003. By the end of 2004, U.S. beef exports had fallen 82 percent to 200,000 tons CWE as major importers cut off the purchase of U.S. beef. It was not until 2011 that beef exports regained their previous level.By Daryll E. Ray and Harwood D. Schaffer , June 25, 2012

A flood, drought or other natural disaster could wipe out a year’s profits. Just last year, the heat wave we experienced killed more than 1,500 head of cattle as well as other livestock.By Kristi Noem , May 21, 2012

Beef Talk: Drought and stocking rates are two key terms
The wonderful fall of 2011 and enjoyable winter of 2012 are over. Not unlike purchases that are put on a credit for payment later, good fall and winter seasons generally require payment.By Kris Ringwall, NDSU Extension Service , April 03, 2012
