WASHINGTON — The probability that Congress and President Barack Obama will conclude a “fiscal cliff” bill to deal with the nation’s deficit, much less include a new farm bill in it, is low, but House Agriculture Committee ranking member Collin Peterson, D-Minn., said he is not worried about whether a bill is passed before next year.
Milk production continues to improve in Wisconsin, where dairy producers increased their output by 2 percent. Most of the 23 major milk-producing states in the nation showed similar gains. Two states had lower production, and Minnesota's output was unchanged at 786 million pounds.
A Minnesota farmer who distributes raw milk is due to stand trial next week for food code violations in a case that pits the government's efforts to ensure a safe food supply against consumers' rights to choose what they drink and eat.
