DENVER — Water produced by coal-bed methane drilling can be treated for livestock, wildlife and farms to use, but costs and regulations are causing most of the water to be disposed of instead, according to a prepublication version of a new study.
HELENA, Mont. — The state Department of Environmental Quality violated federal and state environmental laws by allowing an exploration company to pump untreated water used in coal-bed methane drilling into the Tongue River, the Montana Supreme Court has ruled.
The government press is on to recycle methane from cow manure and convert it into electricity.
