The other day at the grocery store, I bumped into someone I know. She had a cartful of groceries and was preparing to send food gifts to family members living in another country. I’m sure when they pick up the box of goodies from the Postal Service, they will be very grateful.
“That apple tree is amazing. Look at this apple!” my 12-year-old daughter exclaimed as she held up a large, bright red apple. She had just come inside after using our apple picker to pluck some of the brightest red fruits high in the tree in our backyard.
I wrapped the ties of the plastic lobster bib around my neck and stared at the bright red lobster on my plate. I was in Maine, where lobster is plentiful and less expensive than in the Midwestern states. In fact, I could see the lobster traps from our hotel window.
I noticed the lineup of fully ripe, plump tomatoes on my countertop the other day. Someone in my house had been harvesting our garden. I went outside and saw dozens of more nearly ripe tomatoes of various sizes and shapes waiting to be plucked, prepared or preserved.
