Q: In 2009, I planted some apple trees. I was told to paint the trunks so they wouldn’t burn in the sun. I painted them with an oil-based enamel paint. Now I heard that I should have used a water- based paint. Have I killed my trees?
Q: I would like to plant a tree next to a brick patio to provide privacy, plus some shade and a windbreak. I am concerned about roots eventually spreading and breaking up my patio. Do you have any recommendation for trees that might be best to plant? The trees will get full sun, and the soil is mostly clay. Thank you.
Q: We are building a new home, so the electric company trenched a hole for the electric lines a few feet away from my ash tree. The tree isn’t quite as high as the house (single story) but almost. Do you think this will kill the tree? Is there anything I can do to keep from losing it?
University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners will be at the Valley Creek Mall, 1750 Weir Drive, Woodbury on Saturday, April 25.
