AUSTIN - The National Weather Service issued a new flash flood warning on Wednesday for Houston where storms have left five people dead and turned neighborhoods into lakes in the fourth most-populous U.S. city.
The current estimate of cropland that will be lost to the lake in 2015 is 133,888 acres, according to Jeff Frith, manager of the Devils Lake Basin Joint Water Resource Board, and Bill Hodous, North Dakota State University Extension Service Ramsey County agent.
Floods that have inundated the Midwest could reduce world corn supplies and drive food prices higher at a time when Americans are already stretching their grocery budgets and people in poor countries have rioted over rising food costs.
