WASHINGTON – The once-popular ethanol industry is scrambling to hold on to billions of dollars in government subsidies, fighting an increasing public skepticism of the corn-based fuel and wariness from lawmakers who may divert the money to other priorities.
AMENIA, N.D. – North Dakota and western Minnesota farmers and ranchers say they’re happy with recent Farm Bills approved by Congress but they want to see slight improvements as federal legislators begin the early stages of crafting the next one.
President Obama’s new federal budget proposal is likely to touch off the second round of political battles over farm subsidy payments in less than a year and has received mixed reactions from North Dakota and Minnesota congressional leaders.
