FARGO, N.D. — Federal prosecutors have increased allegations against farming brothers from Northwood, N.D., saying they added chemicals to potato seeds to cut production in a crop insurance fraud case, taking $2 million from fraudulent insurance claims since 2002 as well as federal disaster funds.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture is forecasting North Dakota's 2013 spring wheat crop to be down 10 percent from last year. The department in its crop production report forecasts the crop based on Aug. 1 conditions at 229.6 million bushels, unchanged from the July forecast.
Locked out employees would not receive unemployment benefits under an amendment added Monday to a state Job Service bill. The amendment was offered to House Bill 1112 by a 5-2 vote in the Senate Industry, Business and Labor Committee.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack plans to make the formal announcement Saturday at the National Pheasant Fest and Quail Classic in Minneapolis. He says in a statement to The Associated Press that CRP was vital in later summer's drought.
