North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad bid farewell to the U.S. Senate on Wednesday, saying he treasured his 26 years of service there but lamenting what he sees as an erosion of the spirit of bipartisanship in the last quarter century.
WASHINGTON — With the farm bill stalled on the Senate floor, Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad, D-N.D., Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., on June 14 introduced an amendment to raise target prices and continue countercylical payments for the next five years that may be the key to get the farm bill through the Senate.
BISMARCK, N.D. — Cooperation with southern Republican senators representing peanut, cotton and rice growers will be a key to whether a Revenue Loss Assistance Program can be passed in the Senate, said officials gathered for a roundtable on the 2012 farm bill.
Although these senators question or don’t want a government option for health care reform, they see highly subsidized federal crop insurance in a much different light. In this, they’re joined by most of the Blue Dog Democrats in the House and fellow farm state senators.
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate has confirmed the appointment of Jim Miller, a former aide to Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., as undersecretary to farm and foreign agricultural service in the United States Department of Agriculture.
