The Agriculture Department says in its annual small grains report that production of spring wheat in North Dakota in 2009 stood at 291 million bushels, up 18 percent from last year and the highest since the 1996 crop of 314 million bushels.
Recent reports by the Institute of Barley and Malt Science in Fargo, state that the demand for malting barley is increasing throughout the U.S. While barley is grown throughout the state, area officials said it’s difficult to grow malting quality barley in the area.
A North Dakota Barley Council official says growers are waiting for more information about the $52 billion takeover of An-heuser Busch Cos. by Belgian brewer InBev SA.
“I’m not going to speculate on anything. It’s going to take time for any details of the transaction to be disclosed,” said Steve Edwardson, the Barley Council administrator.
