SIOUX FALLS — The energy crop fields of the future could render an aesthetic similar to the old Midwestern prairie, with a variety of grasses dotting the lowlands, hills and ridges.The concept of “sculpting the landscape” was envisioned decades ago by North Dakota plant materials specialist Erling Jacobson, who was looking to revegetate fields in the northern Great Plains as a conservation tool.

Director of Equalization Kathy Goetsch appeared Tuesday before the Davison County Commission and expressed concern about HB 1202 and its potential costs for the county.The bill, before the state Legislature, addresses the state’s new method of assessing agricultural land based on production rather than market value. The original HB 1202 was “hoghoused,” or extensively rewritten and sent on to the Senate for further consideration.

Rail panel closes book on ethanol loan default
PIERRE — Seven years after the Tri State Ethanol plant at Rosholt went into bankruptcy, the State Railroad Board decided Thursday to forego the remaining interest owed on a loan made to assist the project.Board members voted 5-1 to declare the loan paid in full. The board has recovered the loan principal of $334,756 and received $11,237 in interest. There was $92,281 interest owed on the loan at the time of the 2003 bankruptcy filing.
